“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” ~Maya Angelou (click to tweet)
When I found out that Dr. Maya Angelou had passed my heart sank.
She inspired me and so many others to dream, to do and to fly.
As I thought of her legacy, and her impact on my life and the life of so many others, tears streamed down my face and this poem was born.
Beauty,
Grace,
wrapped in a perfect gift box,
with confetti on top.
Heavenly gates open!
Roll out the red carpet
because You have
Arrived.
Angels sing
as Earth weeps.
We weep not for you,
but for ourselves.
A Majestic void now fills our hearts.
Your earthly presence replaced by
memories and
Words.
Oh such Beautiful,
Powerful,
Thought-Provoking
Words!
You taught us
how to sing,
how to fly,
how to Rise,
again and again
day after day.
Not with a frown on our lips.
Oh no!
We rise with diamonds in our hair and in between our thighs.
We rise with freedom’s sweet song dripping from our tongues.
Daughters and sons of kings and queens
you told us we are.
And because You said it,
we believed.
No longer caged birds
bound by suffering and despair.
We dance
We laugh
We play
as children do.
No more worries or cares.
The orange sun turns our hair into
shades of lighter red, yellow, and brown.
We now walk towards
the passageway to freedom.
We hold the key.
We have a choice.
Oh!
Phenomenal Woman—
We thank you
for blazing the trail.
Phenomenal Woman—
We bow to you
for showing us the way.
Phenomenal Woman—
We bid you adieu
Humble.
Grateful.
Hearts full.
Phenomenal Woman.
Till we meet again.
You are and will always be,
Beauty,
Grace,
phenomenally wrapped in a perfect gift box,
with confetti on top.
::in loving memory of Dr. Maya Angelou
